The Iconic Kiss in Raja Hindustani: Behind the Scenes of Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor’s Memorable Scene
During shoot, A kiss was shot in more than three days in Raja Hindustani, wherein, her mom Babita, was present throughout the shooting. Raja Hindustani, which released on 15 November, 1996 marking the lead Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor is soon going to complete 28 years since its release. Film Dharmesh Darshan is there who shares some funny anecdotes during making of the movie. He had doubts regarding working with Aamir Khan:
The director in a great exclusive chit-chat with Lehren Retro said he had some apprehensions before agreeing to be a part of the project alongside Aamir in Raja Hindustani. Here’s what he has revealed about the question he asked him before signing up for: I told him one thing, which I give credit to- answering. I can be very soft, but I can be very forthright. So I asked him, “Aamir, how many directors are going to make this film?” He looks at me. So I told him, “People say something and I get worried but that everybody does not utter the same thing, he has to experience his/her own things.” Then he said, “Course, Dharmesh, just one director is going to work”.

As he himself said, “He can understand what the director wants, but asked Dharmesh, ‘Can he have anything to say in the creative process?'”.
To which Dharmesh replied, “But you’ll not interfere. I’ll take the heroine I want to take, I’ll take the song I want to take, I’ll take Archana Puran Singh, I’ll shoot the kissing scene I want to shoot.” Talking about the collective approach with Aamir, Dharmesh said, “He contributed by supporting me so much on all my vulnerabilities. I had this big hit film behind me, and I was very young. I was 28 when Raja Hindustani was released. I was working with a very big actor, and I had supposedly taken a non-actor opposite him.”.

It was talking of the same interview while discussing the kissing scene of Aamir and Karisma which were from the movie. Both were shot-listed. Babita Kapoor mother of Karisma was present at all three days at the set. “She was very good on set, she was very keen. I could smell it on her. She was so纯… She’d never done a kissing scene before. I told her what she would be wearing, the background wouldn’t be ‘sexy’. She said, ‘You don’t need to tell me so much’. Then I called Babita ji inside and narrated that sequence. Because Karisma was still very young, and mother can influence, no? And Lolo had a good image; she wasn’t a very noisy girl. Babita ji sat through the full three days of the shoot, and I didn’t send her away.” He says that even the film’s producers wanted the kiss to be included on the poster. To make some noise about it. But he “did not let it”. Along with Kunal Khemu, Archana Puran Singh and Johny Lever in key roles, Raja Hindustani told the tale of a cab driver, who falls for the rich girl, marries her against her parents’ wishes, and then, his stepmother tries to make those two separate. Along with the songs, the romantic drama came out as a 90’s classic.
