Prateek Kuhad on His Musical Journey: “I Did Think It Was Only Gonna Stay a Kind of Private Passion”

Prateek Kuhad’s soulful melodies have found chords with listeners all over the world. Cold/Mess, Kho Gaye Hum Kahan, and Kasoor are just a few examples of his distinctively beautiful music that is actually an amalgamation of the sound of indie folk infused with poignant lyrics. Prateek Kuhad is one of the most famous singer-songwriters from India, but would he ever have thought that that will become a reality? For himself, he admits, there was always a time when music will be more of a “private passion.”

But life had other plans in store for Prateek. Over time, he realized that his music went miles beyond touching the people immediately around him. And, thus, he wanted it to be a profession too in life. Then changed everything about his life-path, and then the rest as history would have it.

Ahead of his tour in India, starting from 8 November, presented by Tribevibe Entertainment, Prateek took a little time out to speak with the Indian Express about the progress he has made as an artist, how his music is affecting, and dealing with the highs and lows of this industry. Also, what’s going inside of his head while making creations, his relationship with the people who connect with his sound, and managing the pressure from fame. Here’s a close-up of his thoughts, in his own words.

The Global Stage: Touring and Connecting with Fans

Prateek’s India tour follows a series of performances around Germany, the UK, and Nepal. When quizzed on how he adapts his music for different audiences, he says the differences are visible between his live performances. “This time, my sets in Europe and the UK are going to be solo acoustic, similar to the ones that I did in the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand some months ago,” he said. “For the ‘Silhouettes’ tour of Nepal and India, it will be with a band.”

His development as an artist, and his development in terms of sound, begins to show itself as the solo acoustic piece takes the form of a full band rendition. Obviously, he likes the experimentation of these different formats making it fresh and exciting to people all over the globe.

From small beginnings to the heights of international recognition.

According to him, the whole journey has been like an ‘incredible experience’. But at the end of it, it remains the fact that a young man is far off from the initial days. “I am excited about what’s in store,” he added. For this is something he managed with steady career rise through music and with authenticity in voice; this he built his own loyal fans following on.

It so happened that Prateek never knew that he is meant to do it.”. Music, in fact, was something that could very well be found in the heart but never entered in his mind as something, when he was at his youthful stage, which could find its way before the general public. “Initially I did not know that I wanted to pursue music,” said Khan. “I thought it would be a private passion. But eventually, I realized I wanted to give it all my heart; I never looked back since.”

It eventually paid off as he gave himself fully to music, taking the big leap into pursuing music. It, however, was not such an easy choice. “It’s not always easy to make that decision to pursue something so personal. But once I did, I never regretted it,” he said. Where he is today, a well-known indie musician and respected within the Indian music scene, is because Prateek was willing to take that leap of creative instinct.

He is a brilliant singer as well as composer. In a singer who also is a composer, Prateek has to keep an equal balance on both his fronts. When asked if he liked being the singer better or the composer better, he replied there isn’t such a thing as ‘least’ or ‘most’. He likes both equally. “I enjoy all aspects of doing what I do. I really love singing and love making the songs more. But I also enjoy performing the songs. It’s all part of the process.”.

For Prateek, each step in the making of the music and in its sharing becomes a fulfillment within itself. Be it to come up with lines which are to be jotted down from soul to page or be standing at the stage’s end connecting to the people within the auditorium, every step forms its worth.

To remain true to oneself within the music industry, that is very cutthroat.

As such, the music industry, as like any other creative domain, is really cutthroat after all. With that many artists competing for attention, not to mention attention coming from a bunch of different directions, standing out is no small achievement. But Prateek was never a man looking to seek fame or to attract attention. His concern had always been his craft. “I have never really tried to stand out in any context, really,” he explained. “My try is really to be excellent at whatever I’m passionate about so that all other things can just be forms of diversion.”.

It made him so grounded and focused on that which matters to him-mostly, the betterment of his music and being in true line with his artistry. It stands in a noisiest world and ceaseless comparison and is a reminder that the ultimate success revolves within the bounds of growing yourself and standing authentically; otherwise, to stand out by merely being heard.

The Most Critical Challenges Faced Throughout the Journey

Despite all the laurels he had won, Prateek was not without his own doubts and fears. At one time or another, he could not help but feel strangled by all the talent and creative skills surrounding him in others. Queried if he ever felt threatened by music coming out of someone else’s system, he reacted candidly that many times in life; it happens that all human beings are bound to carry with them every moment lots of fleeting thoughts and emotions. This route can lead towards salvation when people are concentrated upon their selves and true to the self-spirit.

Most creatives have some form of self-doubt at some point in their lives, but what is different with Prateek is that he has worked his self-doubt into becoming a motivation and not something that would hinder him; he focused on personal growth and remained true to his music to surpass the feelings of self-doubt.

He also has to cope with the pressures of fame and media scrutiny. But over the years, he has become accustomed to being in the limelight. “You get used to it eventually,” he said, shrugging off fame as one of the aspects of the career. Yet even under pressure, Prateek remains connected to his work, rarely getting distracted by what people feel he should do.

Another thing that is bound to happen when you are a public figure is criticism. Prateek has learned to take it all with maturity. “I try not to let it affect me too much. That’s really all you can do. It’s a practice,” he shared. I don’t really care about what is expected of me by my listeners. Or by anybody, really. What is harder is dealing with what I expect of myself.

It is authentic to his audience relationship. Prateek makes music not for any one else but for himself also and for his genuine artistic vision.

Future Outlook

While the preparation is going on to promote the India tour for Prateek Kuhad, it is certainly apparent that this journey, being an artist, has many long years ahead of itself. It’s been through all stages – from private passion to worldwide career. Prateek always kept his identity intact; deep music within his subconscious comes back to haunt all listeners worldwide. And it just seems no one would really know just how far into this musical journey he’s bound to go.

With this stubborn commitment to his craft, Prateek Kuhad will cast spells on the hearts and souls of listeners for years to come with those melodies speaking straight into their souls all over the world.
