In the aftermath of a massive landslide that caused havoc in Wayanad, Kerala, a delegation of parliamentarians led by Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi. The meeting, held on Wednesday, was to seek immediate support from the Central government for the affected communities. Addressing reporters afterward, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made an earnest appeal to put politics aside and focus on humanitarian relief.

Call for Unity in Crisis

Priyanka Gandhi emphasized the grave situation in Wayanad, stating that the landslide has wrought havoc. Whole villages have been swept away, and families lost their homes, business, and loved ones. “The course of the river has totally altered, washing everything along its way. People left without any support system,” she explained.

She said such disasters need to be responded by the collective response of the very support of all political parties. She asked the Centre to buckle up their efforts, failing which the signals will wrongfully be given to the nation and the victims.

Ground Realities: Extent of Damage

The landslide occurred in Kerala on 30 July. It ravaged Punchirimattam, Chooralmala, Mundakkai, and parts of Attamala in Wayanad. Government reports say that at least 231 people lost their lives in this catastrophe, though thousands more have lost their homes. Many villages have lost their homes while schools, houses, and people’s livelihoods are completely destroyed.

Priyanka Gandhi elaborated on the plight of the affected communities, stating, “Families have been torn apart, and entire support systems have collapsed. There are people who have lost everyone in their family. In such a dire situation, it is essential for the Central government to demonstrate compassion and take swift action.”
